In Italia quei canti vennero a cognizione di Melchiorre Cesarotti, il quale conosceva molte lingue, e aveva un gusto suo particolare, secondo il quale credeva che la lingua italiana dovesse continuamente arricchirsi coi francesismi; che Omero fosse un rozzo, sicchè egli s’incaricò di raffazzonarlo, di rimpolpettarlo, come alcun disse, prestandogli e modi e sentimenti convenevoli col galateo nostro; altrettanto fece con Demostene e coi sofisti. Ove non è a tacere che simili raffazzonamenti avea fatto Macpherson sopra Dante, riducendolo in prosa inglese.
