che sentono il tempo, si dice un grande concetto, ma non vi si pon mente; si crede che sia una metafora, mentre l’espressione è molto di sotto alla verità, significando ben più che non dice. Sentono il tempo non solo perchè s’accorgono d’essere giunti ad un nuovo stato nell’evoluzione umana, ma perchè portano il tempo dentro se stessi, e lo portano non come un cadavere della memoria, ma vivo, concreto, fecondato di tutte le attività creatrici che si disvolgono e si maturano nella storia, ch’è quanto a dire le idee. Ciò che sentono quindi è tutto il passato che si afferma, si continua e si infutura per loro. In quei cervelli in cui si manifesta il senso moderno, c’è come il compendio della ragione; poichè la realtà che recano in se stessi esprimendo le potenze più alte e più vere dell’essere, è realtà innalzata già dallo stato fisiologico allo storico, e
