Discussione:Lettere (Machiavelli)/Lettera XI a Francesco Vettori

"Lettera XI" modifica

Sorry to write in English. This letter must be, I guess, Lettera XI in the edition by Bonfantini cited here, but it is not Letter no. 11 in other editions. For example, it is letter no. 216, on archive.org/details/MachiavelliNiccolo.TutteLeOpere.EdizioneDiMarioMartelli19712018/page/n2871 page 2873 of the Machiavelli edition by M. Ciliberto and Pier Davide Accendere (Niccolò Machiavelli: Tutte le opere. Firenze: Bompiani 2018). I'm not sure that calling it Lettera XI a Francesco Vettori is helpful. It might be better to call it "Letter of 10 December 1513 to Francesco Vettori" (in Italian of course). That would help readers to find it in other editions. @Andrew Dalby Hi! The name comes from the edition the Letters are taken. Here the source is Niccolò Machiavelli, Mario Bonfantini ed., R. Ricciardi, Milano-Napoli, 2006, and the letters are numbered by addressee (check the previous link). As long as there are no common name used through the different editions, I reckon that we will stick to the one used here. What can be done, is to link the different versions of the letters on Wikidata. --Ruthven (msg) 11:53, 25 gen 2019 (CET)Rispondi
@Ruthven Thanks for your reply. Yes, I understand your point. I raised the issue because I am editing a book, one of whose contributors cited this letter (giving no source) and called it "Lettera XI". I looked at many Machiavelli editions and I found several different letters numbered "XI" or "11", but I could only find out which letter she intended when I happened to look at Wikisource. Ah, well, looking at it from the other point of view, this demonstrates that consulting Wikisource was useful both to my contributor and to me! Andrew Dalby (disc.) 13:48, 25 gen 2019 (CET)Rispondi
